A mother hands her writer son a manuscript. It is her novel attempt to do something rare--fix herself in time and place, establish her identity as daughter and as woman, and straighten the record of many silent, bitter years. The son has long known about the bitterness--of his mother's break with her orthodox father--for it is the stuff of family legend two lovers fleeing down a Brooklyn fire escape to break out of a domestic prison and into a welcoming Italian family in the country. But the novel fills in much more the romance of the mother's secret conception in Hungary; the drama of emigration to America and reunion with the never-seen father; and the hidden springs of the rupture between father and daughter dictating the tale in the first place. Nor does this unforgettable cry of freedom stop with finding a dream-daddy, or getting revenge on an abusive one. It becomes a choral drama of call and response son responding to mother's story with context, commentary and episodes from the remainder of her life; mother responding ghostly to son's brooding dilation of her tale. What results is a triple love story of Esty and her Hungarian duke; of Margaret and her Italian savior/lover; of au-son and his legacy an emotional, spiritual, possibly genetic narrative that is at once interrogated and embraced; both heard as familial romance, and overheard as postmodern origin myth.

Esty A Novel/Memoir edition by Lawrence DiStasi Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Esty by Lawrence DiStasi
Esty is a masterful piece of storytelling that begins in Hungary shortly before World War I and extends through 3 generations of a family ending in today's California. The journey is intensely personal and it provides the reader with recollections and insights that only a family could gather through its varied vantage points and times. The author's mother, Margit, leaves Lawrence with a hand written memoir and instructions to make it readable without changing the content. "Ma" claims the manuscript is a novel and yet does little to hide the autobiographical nature with its startling and sometimes jarring revelations.
DiStasi uses the memoir as a vehicle to discuss discrepancies with his mother, and thereby the reader, through amazing craftsmanship. Just as you sense an inconsistency, the author confronts his mother in personal dialogue, although she is departed. This permits DiStasi and the reader to enter discovery together. The story progresses through examination of records and intimate questioning of the memoir and the mother by DiStasi. The story seems nearly a script and yet unscripted by the reality of available records. The reader feels the frustration and pain of the author as he peels the layers of the truth from the past and tries to make peace with that past as each of us does. DiStasi does this at a level that few of us attempt and still fewer achieve.
The story is intimate and complex and yet easily understood by the reader because DiStasi remains by your side throughout the journey. You remain sympathetic without becoming voyeuristic as you seek the truth with him. The story is so compelling that the reader will resist putting down the book until that last part of the epilogue. Even that space, so often filled with gas, is, instead needed revelation from other family members about their common history complete with the differences that live within a family. It helps complete the family portrait.
