Mitch is on a last-ditch drive to save his career with the Scottish Institute of Archaeology after his ex-lover Lewis stole his research into the legendary Pictish saints. Mystical pre-Celtic statues are hidden somewhere on mist-wreathed Dove Island. Now Mitch is tearing out to the coast in the hope of reaching the saints before his treacherous ex can stake a claim. At his side is his devoted assistant, Owen.

Owen adores Mitch, but he’s the quiet, loyal type. Despite himself, Mitch is still dazzled by memories of flamboyant Lewis -- and in danger of destroying his newfound happiness with Owen. As the race for the saints intensifies, Mitch is losing perspective. Will he learn how to appreciate the love of a good man before he plunges himself and Owen too far into the deadly mysteries of Dove Island?

As always, I love Fox's prose. One random example:

"I tried to speak. Something was wrong with my throat, as if the rain had got in. Rain and rust and shame, enough to drown me."

This isn't my favorite Fox tale. For the best of Fox, try (in ascending order of length) Life After Joe, Driftwood, or Scrap Metal. But even though this doesn't rank at the top of her work, it's still plenty good. For one thing, it has plenty of that trademark Fox sense of place -- I swear, you'll have to search long and hard to find anyone who creates as much feeling of locale as Fox does. And, of course, there's that Fox prose. Gotta love it. Fox seems to specialize in MCs that have been emotionally devastated in some way, and her bold....meaty?...strong?....emphatic?....vital?...prose always does a wonderful job of bringing that devastation to life without becoming maudlin or sappy.

So what didn't I like about this story? Well, I'm not a big fan of paranormal -- and that is a definite element here. Also, I generally prefer longer stories -- there just isn't enough time to establish either character or plot in a short story. Third, both the MC and the "bad guy" undergo significant changes that, IMHO, happen too quickly to be easily swallowed -- another side effect of the short story form.

Overall, though, this is still a fine tale. Everyone should read more Harper Fox!

In Search of Saints edition by Harper Fox Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Ms. Fox packs a lot into a small canvas, evoking beautifully her Scottish setting (as she does for all her milieus), her three protagonists, and their struggle to find what really matters to them. Loved the main couple, and the villain is convincingly seductive.
Harper Fox has yet to disappoint in any of her books I have read. A well constructed story line, great characters & just a nice touch with the 'human' side. I was on the edge of my chair when I read the 'lost at sea' finale, but was charmed with the final twist.
Keep up the good work.. you are on my Must Buy list.
When it comes to reviewing Harper Fox novels, I'm afraid I'm quite useless. I just love them all. This one is no exception. It seems heartless to try and pick out minuscule imperfections, especially after I spend the entire novel just luxuriating in the beauty of her prose. She is the only writer in this genre whose novels I buy without downloading a sample or reading the reviews first. I've never regretted it.
I liked the ending better than the beginning... this book started off rough for me, I didn't like Mitch at all or the way he treated Owen. Then add in Lewis and I really wasn't sure. But once they got to the island and Owen grew a backbone it got better! A bit of adventure, Mitch gets a clue, and we have a great little story!

Overall it was good, not my favorite of Harper's, but very worth reading. If you haven't read Scrap Metal, get it! Loved it! Liked this one, but loved Scrap Metal!

Harper is a fantastic writer, I'm looking forward to many more books from her.
Really short. Superficial, no depth to the story or characters. Forgot what it was about soon as I finished. You can read it in less than 2 hours. Think the author wrote in on her way home from the, I dunno, airport or whatever, when she had an hour to spare.
wow, just wow! This is another wonderful work from an artist so accomplished and talented that there aren't any superlatives or phrases adequate to describe her writing - although Harper Fox could do it, were she inclined to write about herself. At the London Olympics there were performances so beautiful, virtually flawless, that you sometimes found yourself holding your breath and not realizing that you were doing that - some of the diving competitions come to mind, where the competitors seemed to detach themselves from the gravity that binds the rest of us, effortlessly held in midair for a moment before deciding to come back down to where we mere mortals sat waiting - watching them is like reading a story like this one - here the words, and story, sail in the air, mesmerizing the reader until he or she comes back to earth with the last paragraph. But between the liftoff and the slicing into the water there's a tightly woven story about love and self-redemption, some hold-onto-your-seat action and a bit of the paranormal as well. Who cares if the ancients knew more about life than we do - Harper Fox is real, today, and writing stuff that deserves to be read and savored by the widest audience possible. Grab this one and get ready to hold your breath.
Mitch and Owen are two characters I would like to see again. They get through this novella by discovering more about each other by being themselves, which in the case of Mitch is almost as selfish as his ex-lover, and in the case of Owen coming to the conclusion that he is better than what some people think of him. Especially Mitch.

The harrowing action scenes toward the end of this book are brilliantly worked out, and the resolution to several of the major issues, including those of the romantic kind, are somewhat surprising. But, we need more of these two men--they are a terrific couple and they have many adventures ahead of them, hopefully.
